NCIS Question?

I am just wondering I just started watching this show and I love it but I was wondering did Agent Gibbs have a wife and kid(s) that died? I just saw a epsiode where he was reading his flask he was drinking from and it said love Shannon and Kelly and then he said I miss you guys. Does anyone know?
