USAF DEP for open general?

My brother in law is going to the USAF recruiter today. He has his mind set on about 5 jobs but he will also have to put one of the 4 career categories (general, mechanical, electrical, and admin). He is worried about not getting one of the jobs and shipping out under an open contract. How long will he stay in the DEP before they send him under an open contract?
