How can I examine the Cold virus?

I have recently obtained the Common Cold and have small, yellow lumps at the back of my throat. I'm interested in microscopic science greatly and so I want to capture a sample of the virus and look at it through my microscope which has 300,600,and 1200x zoom. I managed to get a swab down my throat and press it against the lumps and wiped it on a slide but I could not see anything. I need some tips, fast before it goes.
