Why are so many U.S. people opposed to the government spending money on space exploration?

I see it as a reasonable thing to do. without exploration, the us would not exist. I recall in history cl that there was alot of opposition to funding the great explorers that found the new world. Just because you cannot imagine something happening doesn't mean It won't. Colonization of mars and other planets is the inevitable next step in our evolution.
